A Postcard from the Revolution is a digital exhibition featuring the transnational history of an overlooked medium: the portable picture postcard. The exhibition focuses on photographic picture postcards published and circulated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution (1905-11) and the Young Turk Revolution (1908). It also traces revolutionary postcards produced and mailed in the Armenian, Iranian, and Ottoman diaspora and compares the picture postcards with other contemporary media, such as newsreels (early film), prints (newspaper illustrations), and paintings. The project is directed by Prof. Mira Xenia Schwerda as part of AAHVS’s Digital Art History and Visual Culture (DAHVC) Research Lab. The resulting digital exhibition will be featured on the digital humanities website Khamseen: Islamic Art History Online (https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/ khamseen/). The Revolutionary Postcard Lab is looking for motivated students, who are willing to gain research experience in media history and Middle Eastern visual culture and who are interested in contributing to building a digital exhibition project. While both roles will include a research portion, the lab is seeking to fill two distinct roles: a technology assistant with web programming experience and a research assistant familiar with historic research and, ideally, with suitable foreign language skills (Turkish, Armenian, Persian, Arabic, or Russian). The lab meets weekly on Friday afternoons for 3-4 hours in Smith Warehouse. |
