This position supports Heat Resilience at the Last Mile: Trusted Community Mediators for Heat-Health Risk Communication, a Duke-NUS (National University of Singapore) Joint Sustainability Research Initiative grant running from September 2026 through February 2028. The project asks how trusted intermediaries, such as faith leaders, community organizations, and social service partners, can help close the gap between expert heat-health risk information and protective action in communities. The Duke team will examine transferable lessons from North Carolina's Cooling Communities project, where faith leaders and faith-based institutions serve as trusted partners in rural heat resilience. The NUS team will examine how Singapore's multireligious, public housing, and social service landscape shapes appropriate messengers in an urban context. The project will produce a comparative framework for identifying culturally appropriate heat-health messengers and a larger proposal for future community-level testing.
