Job Description |
The America Reads America Counts (ARAC) and Leap2School (L2S) programs enhance the primary-level reading and math skills of children in Durham while offering Duke students a chance to gain valuable experience and learn about their community. ARAC/L2S Tutors will serve students in pre-k through high school classroom settings (under guidance of site/school educator), complete orientation and trainings, meet with fellow tutors, and build community partnerships. Our community partners include Durham Public Schools, local non-profit orgranizations, and afterschool programs. Program Components: - Scheduling: Tutors will sign up for tutoring sessions based on their course schedules and transportation needs.
- Location: Tutors will be placed with community partners across Durham with access to walking locations and driving locations.
- Transportation: Tutors will need to get to and from an ARAC/L2S site via transportation provided by ARAC/L2S, public transportation, or personal transportation.
- Average Weekly Commitment: Volunteer tutors are eligible to serve up to 8 hours a week with availability Monday through Friday, 8 AM - 7 PM.
- Training & Support: All tutors participate in a mandatory orientation, Duke minors training & background check, Durham Public Schools background check, training & supplemental opportunities, and tutor cohort meetings.
- Communication: All tutors are expected to communicate regularly with program staff and site placements.

Job Requirements |
Tutors are expected to: - Understand that working with children requires reliability, commitment, and continuous learning
- Attend orientation on Saturday, September 12 (tentative)
- Attend all required trainings and meetings
- Attend optional professional development, health & wellness sessions, and events each semester
- Attend scheduled tutoring sessions
- Check into sites and submit timesheets on time
- Participate consistently in appropriate communication, follow-up, documentation, and evaluation activities
- Provide reasonable excuse and documentation to staff if unable to attend any sessions, activities, and/or meetings
- Get to and from placement sites via transportation provided by ARAC/L2S, public transportation, or personal transportation
- Accommodations available under the Student Disability Access Office
Required Trainings & Background Checks: - Complete Duke University's Minors Policy Training
- Submit Durham Public Schools (DPS)/Afterschool background check
- (Re)submit DPS volunteer registration
- Submit reflection logs
- Get a Tuberculosis (TB) Test prior to service
