The DCL at Duke Merrick Washington Magazine (MWM) Spotlight Graduate Assistant plays a key role in highlighting and amplifying writing related to Black history, culture, and contemporary Black life produced across Duke University. This work contributes to broader access, visibility, and engagement with Black scholarship and storytelling. As part of the Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library and the DCL at Duke initiative, you’ll contribute to a unique editorial and public engagement effort. Inspired by the legacy of the Merrick Washington Magazine, this role focuses on curating, contextualizing, and sharing existing work—positioning DCL at Duke as a hub for bringing important writing into wider public conversation. What You’ll Do - Identify and track Duke-affiliated writing related to Black history, culture, and contemporary Black life. - Draft concise summaries or editorial framing text to make selected pieces accessible to broader audiences. - Curate and update content for the “MWM Spotlight” section of the DCL at Duke website. - Highlight work by Black faculty, students, and contributors across Duke platforms. - Develop thematic groupings or spotlights that connect related pieces of writing. - Connect featured writing to relevant materials in the Rubenstein Library’s collections when meaningful relationships exist. - Explore opportunities to share curated content through community-facing platforms (e.g., newsletters, blogs, partner organizations). - Participate in planning public programming when connections emerge between featured topics, collections, and community interest. - Communicate with contributors and partners when their work is featured and maintain basic documentation of curated content. - Contribute ideas for expanding reach, audience engagement, and circulation strategies. - Regularly work in the Rubenstein Reading Room on the circulation desk. - May work occasional evenings and weekends. - Routinely move library materials weighing up to 40 pounds. - Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible. |
