We’re looking for 5-4 people passionate about food and farm systems to join our summer student field crew. This is a great opportunity to learn about organic agriculture and food systems sustainability on the ground and with your hands. These are paid positions, 20 hours/week open to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at Duke, that run from the beginning of mid May to mid August. SCOPE : As a DCF Farm Crew member, you will: Work with the farm’s full-time staff and fellow student crew members to accomplish daily tasks with increasing independence, including planting, weeding, washing, harvesting, and delivering sustainably-grown produce to our community partners. Learn (and eventually teach!) some of the whys and hows of small-scale agriculture. Become an ambassador for the work that we do on campus and during our open Community Work Days (Thursday mornings) SCHEDULE: Crew members will work 20 hours/week starting as early as May 4th and no later than May 18th, and work through at least August 7th, the end of the summer semester. Farm crew members must work a consistent weekly schedule of Monday - Friday, 7am-12pm, except on Wednesday. Farm crew members must work 4-6 weekend irrigation shifts (averaging about 1 hour).
Student crew members must have reliable transportation to and from their daily work shifts. Crew members are encouraged to carpool to the farm. Duke no longer provides free transit between the farm and campus via Lyft. |
