Housed within the Sanford School of Public Policy, the Hart Leadership Program prepares and inspires undergraduate students to practice the art of ethical leadership in public life. In addition to academic classes, program offerings include internships, fellowships, and co-curricular leadership projects at Duke, in Durham, and in communities across North Carolina and around the world. The mission of the Hart Leadership Program (HLP) is to teach Duke undergraduates how to practice ethical leadership by fostering community-based action, research with a civic mission, and collaborative practices that build genuinely public goods. As a core offering of the Hart Leadership Program, Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL) is a nationally recognized, intensive 12-month leadership program for Duke undergraduate students who seek to deepen their capacity to build community, address complex social issues, and implement systemic change. By integrating academic study, community engagement, critical reflection, mentoring, and leadership development, SOL equips students with the frameworks, skills, and knowledge to work alongside others on matters of public concern. Job Description: The SOL Teaching Assistant will work with HLP Program Coordinators and HLP faculty to provide support for the Service Opportunities in Leadership (SOL) Program. Student will generally work 6-10 hours per week. We offer a flexible schedule to accommodate coursework. We also seek students whose values and vision align with the Hart Leadership Program and who are interested in learning about program development and implementation. The SOL Teaching Assistant will have the unique opportunity to exercise agency and take ownership of projects through the process of supporting SOL this year. This role will ideally provide the student worker with valuable leadership experience that will serve them beyond the scope of employment. Specific Responsibilities: Spring 2026 – reporting to Professor Alexandra Zagbayou • Serve as a SOL ambassador by recounting own honest experience as SOL Fellow to new class of SOL Fellows (or, if not a SOL alum, by sharing stories of the SOL fellowship from other previous SOL Fellows). • Provide classroom support and peer mentorship during a few scheduled SOL classes. The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:25 PM to 2:40 PM. • Advise, support, and mentor SOL students via office hours, with responses guided by empathy and experience in order to best facilitate student growth. • Liaise with guest speakers to coordinate class visits. • Be available for a bi-weekly meeting with Prof. Zagbayou to discuss course matters and student support. |
