Job Description

The Kenan Institute for Ethics’ Prison Engagement Initiative is launching a new Justice Lab to coordinate student volunteer efforts with local prisons and re-entry facilities. The Justice Lab Fellow role is designed for students interested in leadership, community engagement, and prison education/re-entry support.

Justice Lab Fellows will not be compensated for direct volunteering, but rather for the time spent organizing and supporting Duke students who volunteer in these spaces.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Coordinate and organize student volunteer efforts with partner prisons and re-entry facilities.
Support the launch and management of ongoing and new volunteer/tutoring opportunities.
Manage logistics such as scheduling, transportation, and volunteer communication.
Ensure completion of required training and compliance with institutional and facility policies/procedures.
Troubleshoot challenges that arise in programming and propose creative solutions.
Develop new ideas and opportunities for student engagement.
Collaborate with fellow Justice Lab team members and meet biweekly with the program director, Professor James Chappel.
Prepare a year-end report to share best practices and recommendations for Duke and other NC universities regarding engagement with incarcerated populations.
