The Duke Center on Risk seeks a graduate student assistant to support the foundational development of ResileLab, a new open-access data and analytics platform designed to advance interdisciplinary research, education, and engagement on climate risk. ResileLab will provide streamlined access to curated datasets, modeling tools, and analytical frameworks that enable diverse users—including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and community partners—to evaluate adaptation strategies across sectors. This position is ideal for a student interested in the intersection of data governance, resilience science, and applied policy research. The student will contribute directly to the background research and strategic planning needed to launch ResileLab and to position it as a nationally recognized platform for turning climate data into resilience solutions. Key tasks This student will work with Center on Risk personnel to conduct background research and help scope the ResileLab initiative. Responsibilities include: - Conducting needs assessments to understand potential user groups, decision contexts, and priority applications for ResileLab.
- Reviewing the data and analytical foundations required for resilience-related research and decision support, with attention to sensitivity, privacy, and governance issues.
- Surveying related data platforms, modeling tools, and technical architectures to identify models and precedents that inform ResileLab’s design.
- Supporting development of recommendations for data governance frameworks, licensing approaches, and ethical use of sensitive data.
- Researching opportunities for strategic partnerships with universities, government agencies, nonprofits, and industry stakeholders.
- Assisting RESILE faculty and staff in drafting reports, memos, and presentations that summarize findings and provide actionable guidance for platform development.
