Assists in arrangement and description of physical or digital archival materials. Primarily includes work with special collections in the John Hope Franklin Center for African and African American History and Culture or University Archives, and could potentially include work in other subject areas such as advertising, history of medicine, literature, economics, photography, political science, religion, sociology, and women’s studies. This position will work at Smith Warehouse, and the student assistant will collaborate with members of the Technical Services unit of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The primary tasks will be transferring archival papers into new folders and boxes, labeling folders or boxes, arranging large numbers of folders alphabetically or chronologically, and typing titles into spreadsheet inventories. Duties may include: - Handwriting folder titles.
- Straightening and neatening of disordered papers into new folders.
- Removal of rusty paperclips.
- Reordering and organizing folders by title.
- Typing folder titles into spreadsheet templates.
- Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have: - Strong attention to detail and willingness to do repetitive work.
- Good organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with MS Office applications, particularly Excel.
- An ability and commitment to carefully handle rare materials.
