The Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy includes the DukeEngage Convocation and a Saturday Seminar series designed to foster student preparation and reflection on a wide range of topics, including ethical engagement, community partnership, and cultural awareness. The seminar curriculum is developed by DukeEngage and facilitated by former DukeEngage participants serving as DukeEngage Academy Leaders (DEALs). DEALs receive training to facilitate meaningful discussion and participate in a collaborative teaching and learning community, meeting regularly to prepare, practice, debrief, and reflect. Position ResponsibilitiesDEALs are expected to: - Be available to facilitate Academy seminars on Saturday, March 28 (10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.) and to attend the DukeEngage Convocation on Friday, February 20 (4:00–8:00 p.m.) (note new dates and times this year).
- Attend all required weekly DEAL meetings, including orientation, training sessions, practice sessions, and debrief meetings.
- Engage in reflective practice by revisiting and developing personal DukeEngage stories. This may include participation in a storytelling workshop, attendance at a live storytelling event in Durham with the cohort, and development of a story for possible inclusion in the DukeEngage Convocation ceremony or Fall Reunion.
- Review, acknowledge, and respond to students’ written reflections in pre- and post-seminar assignments.
- Both offer constructive feedback, questions, and suggestions to DukeEngage and support final programmatic decisions made by DukeEngage. Commit to facilitating with enthusiasm.
- Demonstrate flexibility and generosity when establishing group meeting times, which are likely to occur on weekdays, and prioritize the DEAL role as one would any employment responsibility.
- Maintain timely, professional communication and respond promptly to email and other program communications.
Time commitment and compensation: · February 9–March 27: 3–5 hours/week · March 28 (the date of this year’s Academy): 8+ hours · March 29–April 4: 3–5 hours · Weekly meetings will be scheduled after hiring, with course schedules in mind. · Compensation: $21/hour Applications accepted on a rolling basis through January 26th or until positions are filled. |
