The colonization and growth of pathogenic bacteria in hospitals represents a serious threat to the health of patients. To investigate this threat and how to mitigate it, the Gunsch Lab is participating in a research study at the Duke Hospital which is collecting samples from the sinks of hospital rooms and testing them for pathogenic bacteria. Our lab is investigating the entire microbial community present, so after collection, we pick up aliquots of the samples, freeze a portion for later analysis, and then filter and extract the microbial DNA for sequencing. We are looking for a detail-oriented, organized undergraduate student with an interest in microbiology, microbial ecology, or related fields to support this research. No prior research experience is required, though experience with basic microbiology lab techniques (pipetting, sterile technique, media preparation) is preferred. Samples are collected once a week and processed ASAP, so consistent availability from week to week is extremely important. If interested, please apply and send your resume to Neil Gottel (neil.gottel@duke.edu) ***APPLICANTS MUST ALSO APPLY AND UPLOAD A RESUME/CV TO JOBX TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION. |
