Overview: The Garage TECH (Training, Equipment, Coordination, and Help) plays a crucial role in supporting students in the Mechanical Engineering department by ensuring the safe and effective use of tools and equipment in the Garage Labs, located in Wilkinson 129/133. Garage TECHs help students develop prototypes and provide guidance on the proper use of machinery and safety procedures. They are responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workspace during off-hours, including evenings (6-10 PM) and weekends. Responsibilities: • Advise and assist students working in the lab, helping them safely operate tools and equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, Arduinos, power tools, and more. • Ensure students follow all safety guidelines and wear proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the lab, ensuring all tools and materials are returned to their proper places after use. • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for lab equipment, helping students with prototyping and design development. • Enforce lab policies, including rules regarding workspaces (e.g., ensuring lunch tables outside are not used as work surfaces). • Assist with inventory management by tracking the use of non-consumables (e.g., Arduinos, breadboards) and ensuring they are returned after use. • Be available during evenings, weekends, and other off-hours when students are working outside regular class and lab times. Qualifications: • Experience or familiarity with prototyping tools and lab equipment (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, power tools, electronics like Arduinos and breadboards). • Strong understanding of safety practices and procedures in a lab setting. • Ability to communicate effectively and assertively when enforcing lab rules, while maintaining a positive and supportive attitude. • Self-motivated, responsible, and able to maintain an organized and clean work environment. • Comfortable taking initiative to address issues as they arise, ensuring a safe and respectful lab environment. • Availability during evenings (6-10 PM) on weekdays and during weekends, with approximately 10 hours of lab staffing required per week. Training: Garage Lab Assistants will receive comprehensive training to ensure they are knowledgeable about lab equipment, safety protocols, and the expectations for assisting students in a hands-on environment. Interview Process: Candidates will be interviewed to assess their technical skills and their ability to effectively support and guide students in a lab environment. |
