The Magwene lab is seeking an undergraduate student on campus this summer to fill an entry-level position. Our research is focused on Cryptococcus, an opportunistic pathogen which infects mainly those that are immunocompromised. Infections occur from inhaling spores from the environment and not from human-to-human transmission, highlighting the importance of understanding the traits that make strains pathogenic and the mechanisms of drug resistance. To characterize the genes and alleles contributing to virulence, our lab utilizes the genetic variation found in wild isolates of Cryptococcus. Duties of the entry-level position include lab support (making media, re-stocking, autoclaving, etc.), lab organization, and general cell culture maintenance. Once proficient in sterile technique and general lab duties, the student could assist in phenotypic assays, microscopic imaging, or drug response experiments.
