During the 2024-2025 academic year, Duke plans to launch a new initiative to strengthen teaching and learning at Duke. The Office of the Provost seeks a summer intern/research assistant to conduct background research on relevant literature and best practices across higher education. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in teaching and pedagogical innovation. This effort stems from Duke’s Strategy Team 2030 initiative which articulated Duke’s future needs and aspirations in relation to research and education. These recommendations were detailed in the final report, issued in Spring of 2022. Since that time, individual recommendations have proceeded but several of the report’s most ambitious goals for teaching excellence and learning innovation require a more structured university-wide effort to operationalize the original vision. To that end, next year, we anticipate launching three inter-connected committees to look at: teaching and mentoring standards and career pathways; opportunities to facilitate more cross-school teaching; and means to create more adaptable academic structures that support innovation (e.g., calendar changes, use of digital technologies). The research assistant will collect relevant background information to launch these committees in Fall 2024. Key responsibilities of this position include: - Conduct literature reviews on best practices related to the topics of each of the three committees - Use higher education media to uncover trends and identify best practices, including specific university exemplars - Collect information on current practices at Duke - Use the literature review to prepare a short executive summary of findings for the committee |
