The Susan Baker Reinhardt Internship at Pearse Memorial Library (Duke University Marine Laboratory) was established to honor the life of Sue Baker Reinhardt and recognize her passion for marine science and support of the Duke University Libraries. With a focus on the intersections of science librarianship, marine sciences, and archival materials, interns will learn about libraries while documenting, selecting, and digitizing Marine Lab-related archival materials to create a Marine Lab Digital Collection. The Reinhardt Intern will gain experience with archival research, project planning, outreach, digitization, and library collections. This multi-year project focuses on making materials findable and accessible to the Marine Lab and broader community. Responsibilities • Works with the Head of the Marine Lab Library to identify and prioritize materials that will be scanned to create a Marine Lab Digital Collection. Materials are currently located in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library in Durham, NC and the Marine Lab Library in Beaufort, NC • Develops an instructional guide of the scanning processes and techniques for use by future interns and additional project participants • Creates digital images of photos, articles, and reports using scanning equipment at the Marine Lab Library in Beaufort, NC • Evaluates scans for quality control, ensuring clear images and complete text of digitized materials • Increases findability and accessibility by creating keywords for digital materials • Promotes the Marine Lab Digital Collection through blog posts and social media • Other special projects and duties as assigned |
