Title: Duke University Sustainable Food & Dining Fellow Department: Sustainable Duke Date Range: 10-13 weeks between May 20th through August 9th Hours per Week: 20-30 hours depending on availability Pay: $16-17/hour depending on experience Location: In person in Durham, NC (hybrid work arrangement) preferred Current, non-graduating Duke undergraduate and graduate students are able to apply Project Overview The Duke Sustainable Food & Dining Fellow(s) will be working with sustainability leadership and key campus stakeholders to expand and enhance Duke’s sustainability strategy, specifically supporting Duke Dining. The primary focus will be on collecting, analyzing and developing proactive efforts within Duke University’s past and current operational programming for dining sustainability as well as consulting with peer institutions on strategies and lessons learned on specific topics. These topics fall within two broad categories: Climate conscious food labeling: supporting the development of a climate conscious labeling system proposal for meals across campus. The goal is to increase awareness of the climate impact of food and help diners understand the carbon footprint of different meal options Waste and reuse efforts: contribute to foundational research and planning for the expansion of a reusable container program at Duke. This role will also explore the process of designing effective behavior change campaigns and work to develop resources for students that explore the impact of food and/or packaging waste and effective mitigation strategies
While this will differ depending on topical focus, work will include a variety of tasks, potentially including but not limited to: researching existing information at Duke in these topic areas including existing initiatives, current impact, current available statistical data to measure efforts, interviewing stakeholders reviewing peer institutions planning efforts, metrics, goals, and targets in specific topic areas assisting in the development of Duke specific sustainability metrics to track progress over time drafting reports and/or project proposals, designing content for social media, websites, etc.
