Students should be proficient in digital art software, such as Adobe Illustrator or equivalent. Physical qualifications require ability to sit at dissecting microscope for long periods of time and tolerate the visuals of tissue dissection in euthanized laboratory rats. This work does not involve the student working with live animals, and it does not involve the student euthanizing animals. Students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week to the project, take into consideration recommendations and constructive criticism, and communicate effectively and frequently by email and/or Slack. The work will include a supervised training period for approximately one week, after which the work will be independent and flexibly scheduled to accommodate student coursework commitments (provided the assigned work, dissections & digital illustrations, are completed timely) Interested applicants may submit a brief interest statement and 2 art samples. I encourage you to submit art you have already created, and applicants do NOT need to create de novo pieces of artwork for this application specifically. One piece should highlight art with living or biological subjects to demonstrate how you would illustrate anatomy and laboratory rodents. The second piece should highlight non-living subjects to demonstrate how you would illustrate laboratory equipment and electronics. Applications will be anonymous, and the review process will be blinded. Your Duke Unique ID will be your specific identifier, and applicants will be contacted by email. Disclosing information that reveals applicant identity may result in ineligibility. Please apply by May 3 here:Sacral nerve anatomy and digital art application (qualtrics.com) |
