Facilities Job DescriptionsDepartment: Duke Recreation & Physical Education Location: Wilson and Brodie Recreation Centers, Duke University Job Title: Guest Services Attendant (Brodie or Wilson) Job Summary: The Guest Services Attendant is the frontline representative responsible for verifying facility access and membership status, ensuring a welcoming environment, and upholding policies for safe and efficient operation of Duke Rec & P.E. facilities. Key Responsibilities: - Verify member ID and membership status using DukeCard, Mobile DukeCard, or MyRec Mobile ID.
- Deny or approve access based on membership validation displayed in Fusion.
- Assist guests and visitors with entry procedures and enforce guest policies.
- Provide outstanding customer service through warm greetings, helpful responses, and phone etiquette.
- Log and manage lost and found items appropriately.
- Maintain accurate records for guest/visitor logs and incident/accident reports.
- Assist with key management, facility reservations, and coordination with other staff (e.g., facility monitors, lifeguards).
Work Environment: The Guest Services Attendant works in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment at the front desk of Duke’s recreation centers, interacting with members and guests to verify access, provide information, and enforce facility policies. The role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain professional during emergencies, all while maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Job Title: Facility Monitor (Brodie or Wilson) Job Summary: The Facility Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and smooth operation of all recreation facilities, including Brodie OR Wilson, Card Gym, and the IM Building Squash Courts. This role involves conducting regular walkthroughs, enforcing facility policies, responding to emergencies, inspecting equipment, and providing excellent support to members and staff. Key Responsibilities: - Perform regular walkthroughs of all recreation buildings to ensure safety and policy compliance.
- Serve as the first responder during emergencies; coordinate communication with Duke Police and facility staff.
- Enforce access control and ensure all doors and emergency exits are properly secured.
- Monitor cleanliness in locker rooms, restrooms, and general facility areas; report and escalate maintenance issues as needed.
- Inspect, clean, and report issues with cardio and fitness equipment; label broken equipment appropriately.
- Enforce user conduct policies and appropriate athletic attire standards.
- Support front desk and weight room staff during peak hours; provide breaks when necessary.
- Manage lost and found items according to facility procedures.
Work Environment: The recreation facility environment is active, multi-functional, and highly structured, encompassing multiple buildings such as Brodie or Wilson, Card Gym, and the IM Building Squash Courts. It serves a diverse community of members and requires consistent monitoring to ensure safety, cleanliness, and adherence to facility policies. Job Title: Weight Room Attendant (Wilson Only) Job Summary: The Weight Room Attendant is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment within the weight room. This role involves enforcing facility policies, assisting members with equipment use, monitoring safety, maintaining cleanliness, and responding to emergencies. The attendant serves as a key point of contact for members using the facility and works collaboratively with other recreation staff to ensure a high-quality fitness experience. Key Responsibilities: - Monitor member activity to ensure proper and safe use of weight equipment.
- Enforce all posted rules and policies, including dress code, re-racking weights, and age restrictions.
- Proactively assist members with spotting, equipment setup, and general inquiries.
- Respond to injuries or emergencies and complete incident reports when necessary.
- Check out equipment (e.g., weight belts, jump ropes) and log rentals using the Fusion system.
- Report damaged equipment and post “Out of Order” signs when needed.
- Clean and inspect fitness machines and weights according to established protocols.
- Notify management if music volume, content, or system issues arise.
- Collaborate with facility monitors and guest services for break coverage and safety concerns.
Work Environment: The weight room is a high-traffic, energetic environment equipped with free weights, machines, and fitness accessories, serving a diverse range of members aged 16 and up. Music plays throughout the space, and safety, cleanliness, and policy enforcement are top priorities. Attendants must remain alert and proactive, assisting members, maintaining equipment, and ensuring rules are followed. Proper athletic attire is required, and the space must be monitored at all times, creating a fast-paced, hands-on work setting focused on safety and member support. |

Job Requirements |
Interview and Hiring Interviews will be conducted in 1:1, on Zoom, for 30 minutes each. Questions will involve getting to know the candidate and relating to teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. We are hiring for Summer 2026 and Fall 2026, with a strong preference for candidates who can continue working beyond Fall 2026 into Spring 2027. Applicants who are only available for Summer 2026 will not be considered. Qualifications: - Excellent customer service and communication skills.

- Basic familiarity with fitness equipment.
