Job Description

Duke University runs several labs and research programs pushing the boundaries of technologies. Often this means unique and specialized equipment that has not yet been created. The DesignHub team offers design support to leading specialists in their fields that may have little to no design experience yet need to address design problems.

The team pairs with projects that develop a napkin sketch design into a fully working prototype that can help forward continued research and work for the requesting client. Often this means working on developing novel designs to address unique issues. Projects range from a variety of applications in the fields of experimental, artistic, medical, educational, and more.

Besides consultation and design for assigned client projects, the DesignHub team also offer student consultations for anyone trying to figure out how to approach or work on a design problem on their own.

Job Requirements

*Must be an undergrad student when applying for the job*

Meet with the design team to assess project pitches from clients and provide consultation and feedback.

Pair with clients to design a project either from scratch or editing CAD files.

Call with clients to discuss project details and coordinate changes to design and talk through prototype feedback.

Work with Bluesmith staff to fulfill prototype and final model production.

Hold in-person office hour shifts to aid with CAD and other design or engineering questions for the CoLab.

Recommended Skills

- CAD modeling proficiency in multiple software packages or ability to adapt to new software.

- Proficiency in creating and building prototypes from scratch and using machines and other tooling.

- Communication and customer service

- Experience using the tools available in the Co-Lab Studio (laser cutters, 3D printers, waterjet, CNC, etc.)

For ECE students:

- Circuit design and programming proficiency in multiple hardware and languages.
