Duke Technical Services provides technical event support for a wide variety of events across Duke's campus supporting the educational mission of Duke University by providing mission-critical audio-visual support to students, staff, faculty, and outside groups. We are responsible for sound and video support for services in Duke Chapel, Goodson Chapel, Penn Pavilion, and most other locations on campus. We also have the opportunity to support Duke Athletics events and games with audio, video, scoreboard, and other technical and logistical support. You can find us behind the stages, under the bleachers, and in hidden corners of many events at Duke.
Duke Technical Services is currently staffed by 3 full-time employees. After you are hired our staff will work with you to assess your skills and knowledge and train you in a wide range of technical equipment. The skills you learn working for Duke Technical Services are incredibly important for students as they enter the working world. Both the technical acumen and the soft skills involved in our work will prepare you for a career in any field and are highly valued by employers. The skills in audio-visual management, troubleshooting, teamwork, performing under pressure, and resource management will distinguish you from the vast ocean of other candidates applying for work after you leave Duke. In addition to the valuable skills you will learn you will also get to experience a side of Duke many others do not. Our work frequently allows us access to high-profile events, front-row seating at athletics events, and unique spaces on campus that many others will never see. It truly is an opportunity to see a side of Duke many others never will and make your Duke experience extra special. Due to the event-based nature of our work, your schedule will vary on a week-to-week basis. As a student worker, you would receive emails from a member of the full-time staff advertising event opportunities that you can choose to accept. Some work will require training in specific venues before you are able to work an event and getting the training done will allow for a wider choice of opportunities for you. Our work can be physically demanding at times including but not limited to: - Working in heat, rain, snow, etc. - Lifting objects between 10-50lbs - Late nights, early mornings, and long days - Loud noises, flashing lights, unusual work locations As a department, we are committed to diversity and accessibility. If this job sounds interesting to you but you are concerned about your ability to do the work because of physical limitations please reach out. We are happy to work with passionate, committed students, who would like to learn A/V and we will do our best to accommodate special needs or accommodations.
