The America Reads/America Counts Program enhances the primary-level literacy and math skills of Kindergarten to twelfth grade students in Durham while offering Duke students a chance to gain valuable experience to learn with their community. ARAC Tutors will serve students in classroom settings, complete training in related literacy and math content areas, and build community partnerships. Duke tutors serve at least four hours a week at one of our 23 partnered sites; Durham Public Schools, non-profit organizations, and aftercare programs while attending professional development trainings and Head Tutor Meetings throughout the semester to build a tutor community and receive tutor resources.
Additional Tutor Program Details:
Tutors will:
· Have tutoring schedules created to accommodate course schedules
· Connect and support youth, teachers, schools, and other tutors across Durham
· Acquire knowledge about Durham, our education system, tutoring strategies, and cultural competency
· Have the choice to use provided University van transportation
America Reads America Counts Tutors will be responsible for the following:
· Serve Durham students as math and/or literacy tutors in classroom settings, under guidance of a site or school educator
· Complete regular trainings to gain professional and personal experience in math and literacy content areas and portray learned skills from trainings during tutoring
· Communicate with ARAC Program staff regularly regarding scheduling, student information, site data, and payroll
· Communicate regularly with site coordinators regarding scheduling, student interactions, and successes/challenges
